Jennifer Baker Porazinski, M.D.
Board Certified Family Physician
From the time I was a little girl, I always wanted to be a doctor. In college, I majored in biology and minored in anthropology. These two diverse interests eventually led me to a unique path of studying medicine. My husband and I went to live and study in Poland, where technology was scarce and doctors relied on their clinical skills and experience to care for their patients.
Although we had initially intended to stay for just two years, we decided to complete the four-year program in Poland, enjoying the cultural aspects of living in Eastern Europe and the unique opportunity of learning medicine by doctors with highly competent diagnostic skills. I returned home four years later with a medical degree and my first son.
I did my residency at a small hospital in Schenectady, where my second son was born. As part of my training, I rotated through Albany Medical Center, an excellent highly technical medical facility that furthered my desire to practice medicine more simply in a small town. After graduation, we moved to a rural area of New York where my third son was born at home.
I became a family doctor because I feel that one of the best ways to help people lead healthier lives is to understand their core support systems and values, which is made easier by caring for whole families. My work in this small community for the past 10 years has provided me the opportunity to learn a great deal about both the miracles and the shortcomings of allopathic medicine. My desire to return to less invasive medicine, as I had been trained in Poland, has led me once again to seek alternative paths.
I developed an interest in holistic medicine a few years ago after attending a lecture on acupuncture that exposed me to a completely different way of thinking about health. Treating patients as a whole, evaluating body and mind, involves addressing not only physical symptoms, but also exploring emotional and spiritual issues that affect health. My studies eventually led me to become board certified in acupuncture through UCLA and inspired me to learn more about other ways of guiding people toward self-healing including nutrition, yoga and meditation.
I am very excited for the opportunity to join the team at CIHH and work with experienced integrative medicine providers to blend traditional and complementary medicine for the promotion of health and wellness.
